School 5-Shree Ganesh Primary School PDF Print E-mail

We visited a public school in the small town of Sankhu. At this school, we were greeted by the principal, teachers and students. The school originally was housed in a small two classroom building. We climbed up very steep steps in a tiny walkway to the second story, where the principal's office and the teacher's lounge was located.

This school is uniquely special to our friend Ramita, as it was the grammar school she attended when she was a child. The building looked a bit run-down, but the vibrant energy the students showed helped us overlook such minor details. They were so happy to have visitors!

We discovered that each grade has a song and that at any school in Nepal, kids know the same song! What a great way to promote cultural unity in the school system! We were not able to get the students to sing their song in the primary grades (grades 1-2), but we were pleasantly surprised in the upper grades at how well the students knew the song!

Also, while interviewing the principal, we discovered that school systems in Nepal share similar obstacles when it comes to change. The principal recognized that a "community school" model is a successful, democratic and efficient model of running a school. However, he faced union resistance from the teachers when the school and the community tried to pursue the change. (See video below)

The school expanded to a nearby building. We walked past some small homes and barns filled with animals and soon reached the other half of the school. Here, the upper grade students learned English, math, social studies throughout the school day.

Overall, this visit was pleasant, but quick, since we had three schools to visit on the same day. Namaste friends!
