Abba Home
The children greeted us with, "Namaste!" and a salute!
The Abba Home for Children is located outside the city of Kathmandu and
up and around a very bumpy twisty hilly road. We finally reached our
destination and were greeted at the gate by David, the founder of the
orphanage. I was surprised by his name, David, (because this is not a
common name in Nepal) but did not think much past that because of his
broad smile and friendly eyes. We entered a beautiful peaceful ground
with a neatly organized vegetable and flower garden, playground, large
green lawn, and a beautiful colorful two story home! We sat underneath
a grass hut pavilion that was very welcoming.
Delivering gifts to the children was great fun!
Immediately children of all ages and sizes began to gather around us to
see who we were and what we were about. The children were all healthy
bright eyed and very well cared for in appearance and behavior. We felt
welcomed and comfortable almost immediately. A connection was made with
each, “Hello” and “Namaste” and quickly we learned that many of these
children spoke very good English. David led us to the pavilion and we
sat for a short time conversing…quickly I could see that David was
quite different than most Nepali people we had met so far, he was a
Christian Nepali. He and his wife, Ruth, had gone to Bible College in
Nepal and both of them were Christian. It was interesting discussing
the philosophy and ideals of the orphanage and it was clear why we felt
“comfortable” here surrounded somewhat in a context of which we were
most familiar with ourselves. It was clear that David and Ruth believed
and lived their Christian faith and were providing a loving caring warm
home for 26 little children who had been torn from their families for a
variety of reasons. Our hearts were filled with love, admiration, and
appreciation for Abba Home, this little slice of heaven on Earth. As
our visit progressed we felt immensely blessed by these children and
the Love we experienced in their presence. We had a great time playing
and reading with the children, taking a tour of their home, and
learning about their different stories and dreams for the future.

When we passed out the student letters and pictures from America the
children became very excited. They read their letters with great joy
and excitement and David said they would definitely write back to their
new American pen pal. We will visit again before we leave to pick the
letters up and see our new friends again!
