School 1-Shree Shanti Vidya Griha Secondary School PDF Print E-mail
Shree Shanti Vidya Griha Secondary School in Kathmandu is the first school we visited. We were greeted ever so warmly by Principal Kishomi Chaudhary. He was kind enough to have Mr. Sudar Prajeed Bhakari, the founder of the school, take us on our tour. As we visited classrooms ranging from class (grade) 6 through class (grade) 10, we discovered the following:

•    Everyone stood up in unison any time an adult entered the room. Together, the class chanted, “Good morning Sir and Mam” and waited for an adult to give permission for the class to sit down.
•    The students sat in rows with girls on one side and boys on the other. Often times, during lessons, students chanted steps of math problems and answers together. It seemed like the students were very engaged in such a fashion.
•    Individual students stood up to speak to an adult and waited for permission to sit down.

Reflections:
The students at this school for the most part spoke English. Heather and Jeff asked some students to engage in English dialogue in a few English classes and the students did a wonderful job. Jeff asked one student some questions about his hobby and discovered that the young boy liked playing soccer (football) and like riding his bicycle. The student, in return, asked Jeff about where we were from. We shared that we are teachers from California, USA and that we teach students that are about their age. It was quite interesting to see the reactions of the Nepalese students, as they vaguely know geographically where we were from, yet the commonality of teachers teaching students in classrooms was an immediate connection. On a different occasion, during a class 9 algebra lesson, as the teacher worked through a complicated problem on the board, and as students chanted the steps along the way as a class, it seemed only normal for us to start chanting the steps with the students. We can imagine students from various backgrounds and cultures sharing in such a way as math is a universal language.

This is the math teacher who did an algebra problem with us.
