Nepal is a developing country and thus provides a variety of learning opportunities to those who visit from the West. Traveling to Nepal would provide enrichment in understanding student cultures and religions from the East, primarily Hinduism and Buddhism. Our goals for this project are to find ways to better serve our diverse students and our community, to become more culturally competent, while also striving to grow and learn personally. While we recognize the rich culture of the Nepalese people, we hope to tap into the teaching culture of Nepal. We would like to learn how teachers in Nepal embrace and embellish the Nepalese culture, while adapting to modern changes in the world, in order to help ourselves and the teachers we work with understand the complexity of integration and assimilation. We feel that because we teach in a Title I school, where the ethnicities of our students are tremendously diverse, we have a lot to learn from Nepalese teachers and students. By keeping reflective journals, photos, video, and blogs our team members will give themselves the opportunity to reflect and process their learning, thus providing a platform for further discussion and exploration. It is through this interactive reflective process that we learn and grow. By exploring and discussing the similarities and differences found between our two worlds on both personal and professional levels, we are better able to understand others and ourselves as well. Truly this process allows for us to learn about and embrace the best from both worlds. We have as much to learn as we have to share. As life long learners and educators, we understand that every relationship and every experience has the opportunity to teach us something. Nepal is a tremendously beautiful and culturally rich country and we feel inspired to share its beauty and spirit with our school community. We view life as a process of growth and change and teaching a process of continuous growth and learning. Each engagement is an opportunity to understand ourselves and others more fully. Thus even the process of writing this grant has provided opportunities for learning and growth that have already altered how we understand our objectives, our students, ourselves, and the world. |
